Odie (Left) & Abe (Right)
This is a picture of two of our Belgians taken several years ago. Odie is a sorrel Belgian Draft Horse who stood 18.2 & weighed about 2100 lbs. He currently resides outside of Orland. Abe, who began as our standing stud on the farm, is the father to 7 other horses currently living on the farm (including several others off the farm). He is a 15 year old blonde Belgian Draft Horse & weighs about 1900 lbs. If you have ridden on the farm wagon any time of the last 10 years, Abe was most likely one of the horses providing the horse power.

Book Family Farm
Draft Horses
The Book Family Farm has owned, breed & trained Draft Horses for over 25 years. This tradition started back in the early 80's when Bruce worked on a ranch in Utah. He bought his first team of Belgian Draft Horses to feed cattle on the ranch and discovered that they were much more economical than tractors, as well as much easier to start in the winter. Having been a true horse lover all his life there was an instant love between Bruce & the draft horses. They are now a large part of our family and a tradition that is passing down through the generations.
Over the years, we have gained a tremendous amount of experience in breeding & handling these gentle giants. A large percentage of the horses we own have been born, raised & trained on the farm. Having learned what we believe to be a large part of our history as well as how this country was originally farmed we enjoy sharing that information. We enjoy talking about and teaching people the history and capabilities of the draft horse.

For more information or questions regarding the draft horses or the services we provide, please contact us by phone or by email at drafthorse@bookfamilyfarm.com.

We currently have several horses for sale here on the farm and are in real need to downsize our numbers. We have more horses now than we have ever had and it really takes a toll on our feed bill, as I'm sure many of you know. At the moment we have 22 draft horses here on the farm, although not all of them belong to us (6 of the 22 are being boarded here-see below for further information).
If interested in any of the horses listed below, please email draft@bookfamilyfarm.com for further pictures and details. There are a wide variety of sizes, ages and levels so if you have a specific interest please let me know and I will pass on the appropriate horse for you. Thank you for your interest in our babies. All our horses become family and even though it is hard to give them up, it is nice to know when they go to good homes.
Attention Horse Lovers or New Draft Horse Owners:
Did you fall in love with a draft horse or already own one but have never had the experience of being able to drive it? We offer training for both you and your horse. Even if you are interested in just learning how to drive & don't own a horse yet, we have the experience for you! Men, women & children are all welcome. One warning - once you get into this, you will fall head over heels and find yourself wanting to buy another horse and do more and more activities with them. :-) Please call or email if you're interested or just have questions about the Draft Horses and their amazing qualities and benefits.
This horse is named Star (a grand-daughter to Abe) & she is one of the farms miracle babies. After a fence line leg accident at a year old, she fully recovered and has turned into a big beautiful girl. In 2004 at the age of 4 she was measured for her first show of the season and she stood at 18 hands tall.
She is owned by Helen & John Mulcahy of Mulcahy Draft Horses.

Our interest in draft horses is in the traditional farming side of the breed, so several years ago we purchased 2 Brabant Belgian Draft Horses to join our crew. Bess (left) is now 8 years old. This is the traditional European Belgian you would see today if you were to travel in Europe. She stands 16.2 and weighs over 2000 lbs. Heidi (center & right) is the mother of Bess. She stands 16.1 and weighs about 1850 lbs. Both of these mares are 100% Brabant which means their lineage goes directly back to Europe rather than through the American Belgian.
In addition to these two beautiful mares, we acquired the father to Bess. His name is Eminent's & he is 20+ years old. He is one of the most gorgeous horses I have ever seen in my life and although his age is showing, he still has a very statuesque look to him. Many of the Brabant's in the United States have lineage connected to this horse. He was a very popular stud in his age. He is also one of the most loving studs I've been around & I have the pleasure of being able to take care of him on a daily basis. If you know of this horse, or have ever had a mare of yours breed to him, I would love to see any pictures you might have. His mass and beauty in his youth must have been magnificent to see! Please email me at drafthorse@bookfamilyfarm.com. Thank you.
I am now very proud to say that we have the next generation of Brabant's here on the farm. We had our first 50% Brabant stud colt born here on the farm in June of 2007. Below there are a couple pictures of him during his first few months of life. I look forward to being able to share him with you as he grows into what I hope is a magnificent example of the Brabant breed.

This horse is one of my rescue projects and is currently in training. He is still very green and has had no driving experience, however with time he has the potential to become a great wheel horse in a big hitch of blonde Belgians.
Price (as is) = $1,000 (with training) = $3,000 obo

Mayah (left & above right) is a 5 month old Belgian filly. She has the potential to be full grown at around 17'2+ and 1,800+ lbs. She is dark sorrel with a white blaze, four white socks and a flaxen/red mane & tail. This filly was born and moved here to the farm on the first day of her life from a mare in my rescue project. She is extremely friendly and fun to play with. She will let you pick up and clean all four feet while just standing in the pasture.
She will only be for sale for the next month and a half and then we will take her off the market until she is 2 years old and completely trained.
